Top 10 Holiday Tips

There are several basic procedures that will help keep your luggage safe:

Safety Locks:
Make sure your suitcase is solid and use hard, lockable luggage. (The locks on your luggage will not be secure against a professional thief but will act as a deterrent if the thief is in a hurry, which is often the case).

Label your Luggage:
Make sure your suitcase is labelled encase it gets lost in transit. (Use a closed name tag so that all personal information is hidden from casual observation).

Secure your possessions:
If your suitcase could open if dropped or mistreated by baggage handlers. Secure your suitcase with a strip of nylon filament tape to prevent it from opening accidentally.

Avoid inviting crime:
‘Don’t stand out in the crowd’ plan to dress inconspicuously and try to blend into the international environment that you are travelling to.

Don’t overload your suitcase:
Check the hand luggage and suitcase allowance to avoid embarrassment or high tax costs. (Limits vary by airline and destination).

Do not appear to be wealthy:
Try to display as little as possible, if you choose to wear jewellery try to turn rings around so the diamonds are not showing and avoid dangling earrings (dangling earrings are easily snatched!).

Pack your case correctly:
There are strict security checks in place at all major airports, items such as razors, penknives and hypodermic needles must be packed into your suitcase, not in your hand luggage.

Keep personal items safe:
Make sure all important items such as passport, wallet, keys, and cards are kept on your person, so developing a personal pouch such as a small bag to your waist will make it harder for thieves to take your personal belongings.

Hijackings or Bombings:
Do not joke about hijackings or bombings as it is against the law. If you see any unattended or suspicious bags, please report it to airport security immediately.

Laptop:
If you are planning to take a laptop with you make sure the laptop battery is charged or that you have the power cord handy as you may be directed by airport security personnel to open and turn on your laptop to demonstrate that it is actually a functioning computer. If you can't turn your laptop on, you may not be permitted to take it on board the aircraft.

how to Pack your Suitecase

When packing your Suitcase/Hand luggage always remember:

Pack your own bags: never let someone else do it!

Avoid packing sharp objects:
Make sure that there are no sharp objects like scissors in your hand luggage. Pack them into your suitcase instead.

Do not pack:
Any substances that are capable of posing risks to health, safety or the environment when transported. Cleaning solvents, aerosols or other similar items, are not permitted on aircraft.

Pack with care:
pack items such as suntan lotion, moisturiser and perfume into individual bags, just in case the packaging gets smashed or the contents leak.
Label your luggage! It is a good idea to label all your bags with your name and contact information before you get to the airport! But remember not use your home address or business title.

Mark your bags:

As well as tying luggage tags to the exterior of your bags, attach some extra tags to the inside of your luggage as an extra precaution.

It is a good idea to tag all your bags with your name and contact information before you get to the airport. Do not use your home address or business title.

Lock your suitcase!
Make sure you have a padlock or security lock on your suitcase this makes it harder to be opened by thieves! You have been warned! If your luggage has locks, you should use them!

What should I do with my valuables?

Leave them at home in a safe place if you can. Do not carry valuables in your hand suitcase; they will be safer in your hand luggage. If you do place any valuables in your hand luggage, hide them in the lower sections of the bags so a quick look inside won’t reveal them.

How can I keep my items neat in my luggage?
Pack your liquid items in less than full plastic bottles, they might freeze and expand if you’re travelling by plane or putting them in a trunk and travelling through cold weather.

Never leave your luggage unattended!
Or take your eyes off your bags! Avoid taking luggage with flashy brand names, as it will make them more attractive to thieves. Learn your destination's airport code and make sure the correct one gets put on your bag.

Lucky escapes:
Remove any items that are hanging off your luggage and could get caught on conveyor belts. Avoid carrying your laptop in a bag that lets everyone know you are carrying expensive electronics. Use the locks on your luggage!

Make your suitcase noticed:
Place a unique bright marking on your luggage so you can easily identify it. This way others will recognize that their similar looking bag did not have the markings and leave yours alone.

Switch Items:
Exchange some of your items with those of a travelling companion. That way if your bags go missing, you’ll still have some items with you.
